“FIONA”

Westsail 42
1975 Fiberglass Cutter
Hull# WSSK00480475

HISTORY: Award-winning sailor and legendary captain Eric Forsyth built the Yacht Fiona from a bare hull. He sailed over 320,000 nautical miles on Fiona. He was a Cruising Club of America Blue Water Medal winner. We have yet to find evidence of any other amateur small boat sailor who has amassed more deep ocean experience. Significant accomplishments on Fiona include:

  • Two circumnavigations of the globe, one westabout via the Panama Canal and one eastabout via Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn.
  •  Circumnavigation of North America via the Northwest Passage.
  •  Arctic cruise to Spitzbergen at 79°N
  •  Cruise to the Antarctic circle on the Peninsular at 67°S
  •  Four roundings of Cape Horn, three eastabout and one westabout.
  •  Four visits to the Falkland Islands, including a cruise through much of the archipelago.
  •  Four cruises to South Georgia Island, sub-Antarctica.
  •  Five transits of the Panama Canal, three transits of the Caledonian Canal, three transits of the Kiel Canal. Single-handed passages include crossing the Atlantic from the Canaries to Salvador, Brazil, crossing the Barents Sea from Nome to Dutch Harbor, Bermuda to New York, St. Thomas to Grenada.
  •  In 2017 – 2018 Eric made a cruise to Portugal, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, and the Caribbean at the age of 86. The crossing from Cape Verde to St. Martin was his 27th Atlantic passage.

FIONA SPECIFICATIONS —Fair Condition. Engine was rebuilt in 2021 and a new exhaust system installed in 2021. Transmission was rebuilt in 2018. The interior is mostly mahogany and teak. The head liner and most bulkheads are made of white Formica glued to plywood. Structurally reinforced in the form of 1 ½ inch diameter stainless steel poles between the hull and cabin top, perfect to grab for when the boat rolls unexpectedly. Electric power is generated while sailing by an alternator coupled to the propeller shaft.
