$1900 USD too much for boat cover for W28?

Now that I'm living on my W28 full time and the Wash DC sun is kicking my tail I decided that I need a full cover over my boat. I got a rough quote of 1500 USD for a full cover that I can still walk under, and 1900 if I get the additional fabric walls which would come down on the sides to reach my lifelines.

Is this a fair price? Seems like an awful lotta money just to keep the sun off.

    Eric :

     Sunbrella is going for 20+ Dollars a yard so 40 * 20.00 = 800.00 + in fabric + 50.00 in Hardware+/-   rule of thumb easy canvas is twice the material = 850.00* 2 = 1700.00

so at 1500 he is making something like 16.25 / hour this includes his shop and machine.

I rounded so may not be 40 yards only 38 or 39.

So if he is quoteing sunbrella you are very much in the ball park, other stuff maybe not.

I hope I mentioned this when you were looking for your B O A T  it is an acronym  (Break Out Another Thousand = the full name) it does happen often more so during your first year. All of the people who tell you owning a boat  is cheap are completely full of s$%#.

Best of luck and keep cool

Thanks, Norm I hadn't considered that sunbrella would be so expensive.

One good thing about Sunbrella:  it is very good!! or in #'s good for 8 to 15 years (Depending)  so look at it as an investment,  or if using blue tarps 50.00 every 3 to 4 month =$2250.00 for the 15 years assuming 50.00 worth of tarps Cover the boat. Some times it is expensive to be cheap.

You might also hit up Aaron on cost (I remember he was doing some sewing +/-) he has a 32 so not sure he will have the dimensions?

One thought (if you buy the cover: get a storage bag with a couple of D rings near the top for it ) i.e. looks like a bean bag when stored (granted a 1500.00 bean bag), works great for a cockpit seat at sea and you can keep it, if you attach the D rings to something solid while under sail. Also make sure the bag size fits through your hatch.

    Best of luck

Ps one other low tech cooling option, is to put up a picture of an iceberg where you can see it, it won't make it cooler but you feel better about being warm! :)
