Lighthouse 1501 installation with SS box bowsprit

    Anyone have experience installing a Lighthouse 1501 on a SS box bowsprit?

    When we selected a windlass we looked very hard at the Lighthouse.  It is a beautiful and quality piece of equipment but we ruled it out primarily for the following three reasons.

    1.  Difficult installation compared to others like the Lofrans Tigress.
    2.  I didn't like the vertical motor installation as water can get into the motor.  I personally          knew one Lighthouse that got water in it in Mexico. That's an anecdotal example and            certainly does not represent their quality.
    3.  Price - Vastly overpriced for what you get.  You can get a brand new anodized Lofrans        for $2100

    We recently replaced our ten year old Tigress for an anodized one.  After ten years of heavy use it was in perfect condition except that it was the white enameled version and needed a paint job.  I had always wanted the anodized version and finding a great price we bought it.  We got $1,000. for the old one.  I don't know how hard the Lighthouse is to work but the Lofrans is real easy, although we never had to make any repairs.  We consider our windlass to be one most important pieces of equipment on the boat and gets heavy use. We used it yesterday to go up the mast.  Just my opinion but I believe the Tigress is by far the best choice.

    Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your input. I want to comment on how beautiful your bowsprit is. How did you get that mirror finish?

    Too late, I have already purchased a 1501 and now must seek to find the most optimum installation. 

    I am having difficulty finding someone that has one installed on a W32. The Lighthouse company owner said there are a few W32 installations out there, however, I haven't found one yet.

    Dan,  you did got a beautiful well made piece of equipment, it is top of the line.  I have seen at least one on a Westsail 32 and it was from the Pacific Northwest but I don't remember the name.  

    I started to polish it out as I've polished stainless before.  After twenty minutes we had about 18" done.  I found a guy who had a business polishing at his house.  It cost as much as to polish it as the sprite cost.  He had four levels and that was the third, it was all I wanted to pay for.

    The 3rd level is certainly acceptable to me. I would like to learn how to do that myself because it could be a good winter time project in the garage.

    I called Lighthouse this morning and got Flora on the line. She said that Jordan could customize the length of the shaft that protrudes downward through the deck, however taking in consideration to have at least 2" in. inside the chain locker to accept the motor.

    Should be a good project.

    One more thing I forgot to ask you; when you have time, could you post a picture of your cranziron (bowsprit cap) if its not too much trouble? I want to see how you fastened your Profurl.

    Dan, I don't have  any now.  But I'll get some tomorrow as we work on the boat 2-3 days a week.

    Dan, I hope this is what you want.  Only thing to note is the toggle which is required by Profurl to eliminate work hardening of the stay.  We chose the second hole back as the first one has a block for the drifter and spinnaker.

    Yes, thank you Jim. You have yours turned 90 deg. compared with mine. I'm was looking for alternatives and this gives me a nice option.
