Simple Solutions: Companionway Drop-Board Stowage

I was trying to come up with a simple way to stow my companionway drop-boards, when they are not in use. I wanted them completely out of the way, but instantly handy should the conditions require them... either due to worsening conditions under sail or with a sudden rain shower at anchor. I think I've come up with a solution that others might find helpful as well.

I discovered that the boards will fit under my stove/oven, yet not interfere with gimbaling. To hold them in place, I made an inverted L-shaped channel that is screwed into the Formica-covered base beneath the stove. The boards are slipped into place, over the channel, then slide down where they are locked in place. The channel is angled slightly to conform with the angles on the edge of the boards, allowing them to ride flush against the side-walls. Regardless of the sea conditions, the board would stay in place. (Although, if conditions were such that this was a problem, they would be in the companionway.)

I hope others find it useful.

    Thanks, Jay.

I haven't tried it under sail yet, but I think it will stay in place under just about any conditions. If not, all I should need to do is put a removable stopper on the forward side (right side in the photo) to keep them from shifting fore and aft. The normal overlap of the top board over the lower board locks the two together.

It's incredibly stable where the boat is currently anchored (on the hard ;-)
