Looking for the Tamarac II

    Hello everyone,

    I am hoping someone here might be able to help locate my grandparents old boat, Tamarac II. My late grandfather, Jack Francis, built it back in the 70's and then he and my late grandmother sailed it around the world from 1984-90. I have traced it to ~2001 where it was sold by Terry from tloose.com. After that I'm not sure what happened to it.

    I am interested in possibly trying to buy it since Tamarac I, my grandparents house in Bear Valley, CA is going to be sold soon.

    If anyone has any information at all I would love to hear about it (even if it is just a story).

    I am pretty sure it was a Westsail 32 kit from 1974-76.

    Brian:  I searched our vessel names but no hits -- the vessel name and vessel former names fields are NOT required to be filled in... 

    Maybe Bud's list will show something... 

    A hull number would be big help if you have it...

    I'm sure it was a westsail too perhaps 1976 was the year. I'd get more info but at the moment all I have is a link for you.

    Here's a link to the USCG's vessel search results for Tamarac II:

    It shows the VIN as WSSK05681275 which Bud can use to peruse his database.

    Thank you guys for the help! I found a letter my grandparents wrote to The Windbag in 1976 VOL 6, No.4. Tamarac II's hull number was in there: W32 #568

    I tried looking up some of those links, but I am currently in Afghanistan and the internet doesn't seem to want to work very well right now.

    I checked my records, which are fairly complete on the Westsail boats, for W32 #568, and here are the owners I show.

    1. Jack Francis, Tamarac II from Stockton, CA
    2. Leonard Gibson, Tamarac II, Lake Tahoe, CA
    3. Terry Loose, Tamarac II, 1996. Costa Mesa, CA
    4. Adam Penny, Smiles To Go, 2006, Middkesex, England.

    I have Adam Penny's mailing address from 2006 when he purchased the boat if you want to try to connect with him..

    Brian, your grandparents were member's of the Stockton Sailing Club here in Stockton, California.  They were the first people from the club to circumnavigate and I believe there has only been one other.  I didn't know the second owners well but talked to them as they were getting ready.  The last time I saw them was when they were in Half Moon Bay, 25 miles south of San Francisco, on there way south.  Ironically we were looking at a Westsail there.  We bought her and kept her there for five years.

    Small world story - About fifteen years ago we were anchored off a small resort town named Capitola, in  Monterrey bay.  While there in a T-shirt shop we were talking to the owner and told her we were down on our boat, a Westsail.  She then surprised us by saying she was from Stockton and lived next door to your grandparents as they built their Westsail.

    I remember seeing a few pictures of their return party with banners that have Stockton Sailing Club on them.

    What a small world! I love hearing stories like that. I will have to ask my father if he remembers some of the neighbors.

    I haven't heard back from anyone yet and am still stuck. 2006 is the last known date of transfer and after that I don't know where else to look. The odds of her actually being for sale is pretty small, but it would be neat to have the complete history.
