    Westsail 28 Adele

We have bought a bigger boat!  Upsizing to the 32 and husband says I can’t keep both!  so my lifelong “project” boat will be going up for sale shortly. I bought this factory finished but somewhat neglected boat over 15 years ago. She spent much of the 10 years before that on the hard. I’ve focused on safety and seaworthiness but there is still cosmetic interior work to be done and also refresh of exterior teak, deck paint needed. We will be attacking these projects before listing her with a broker in December or January , but price will go up The prettier she gets. Motivated to not have 2 slip fees for too long so come and see her and make me an offer!

In 2007 (before relaunching) refit included  new bowsprit,  standing and running riggjng and epoxy barrier bottom coat (2 coats), new cutlass bearing, 3 coats interlux polyurethane on topsides (this is holding up well and just needs buffing, but the red stripes only had 1 coat and need repainting) etc.

In 2010 repowered with Beta 25 + new prop, still very low hours and runs beautifully!

In fall 2016 haul out - new flax packing, new bottom paint, new through hulls and mast rewired + new mast lights & LED spreader lights, & new masthead antenna.

Sails are original but in good shape, I don’t believe they were used much as the boat sat in the Delta for years before being on the hard for 10 or 15 before I bought her.

She’s ready to sail now, safe secure and simple systems (including basic AC and DC wiring, composting head). She Has taken us safely back and forth to Catalina a couple of times each summer for the last several years. But with work and kids I just never got around to final interior and exterior cosmetic upgrades that didn’t seem to be important to our enjoyment (she needs headliner rkeplaced, wood trim replaced in the head and some cabinet doors replaced and water tanks were never replaced). A flexible water tank and cabinet doors are in the boat waiting install.

Paying it forward - so this could be a good deal for someone to carry on the dream. Also a  good project for someone with basic woodworking skills and plumbing skills.

Comfortable spacious interior, has been a great coastal cruiser but is also a very capable offshore boat ”go small, go simple, go now” - before life and kids catch up with you and you are upsizing to accommodate them -  take care of the cosmetics while you cruise.

Boat is currently located in San Pedro, California

Hi Mark - I totally remember you guys! I think you hosted the first Rendezvous I went to at Seal Beach yacht club - before I was an owner when I was still a dreamer and you and your boat where all kinds of encouragement. Yep, this has been my learning curve boat and boy was I lucky to pick a boat that came with construction plans, a manual and Bud to support. Hate to think how wrong it all could have gone if I’d bought that Tahiti ketch!

But with future plans to cruise pacific NW (my job is now based in Vancouver) and almost teenagers on board just need more capacity all around.

Plus while the 28 is an awesome boat to sail, I can see us wanting a roomier snow-bird liveaboard set up in years to come.

Kirk did an awesome job getting us all motivated and over to the Isthmus in October - we will do it again next year so maybe we will see you?

Will post on new “forever” boat when time feels right. For now I will say it’s a boat you’ll know that an awesome sailor and long time friend wants to make sure goes to a good home as he is moving on.  Paying a fair price, but the opportunity to pick up where he’s leaving off is priceless.

Hi Colleen & family , thank you for remembering . I remember when you guys first got Adele and you told me Bud talked you out of re rigging with the Liverpool splice . I'll never forgive Bud for that , hahaha .

Vancouver ,  I hope everything works out well . You mentioned snow-birding , so keeping the boat local I take it ? And live aboard too . Nice .

As for the October Rendezvous  I thought that was a really good Idea and I would  have been there except for one thing , that is  Ms. westi's Birthday and the Isthmus was not her Birthday wish . 3rd. week in May is nothing like it was back in the 90's , back then we would get 15 boats no problem . I would still like to see 3rd. week in May continue , hopefully it will pick back up . But I really like the late summer Rondy at the Isthmus too , maybe we can tweek the date a little .

Good luck to you and yours , keep us posted . M

I forgot about my splicing phase! So funny! Maybe a good thing he talked me out of that.

Anyway you can forgive him, as Bud has talked me into several common sense solutions too! Like don’t replace the boom gallows - you’ll just bang your head on it all day and moving the mainsheet aft to stop the traveler being a hazard to kids fingers and toes!

Also his jenga of alluminum bars for shifting the engine mounts to the right spots for the Beta 25 is still one of my favorite and most elegant hack.

So on the Rendezvous let’s move that discussion to Rendezvous thread - but I’m pretty sure host Capt. Kirk can be persuaded to be a bit flexible - at least while he’s still hitching a ride until his refit is done. Unless Adele doesn’t sell by then I might be able to promise 2 boats in attendance - but then I would surely deserve a promotion to Admiral of the Fleet ( my little brother is a real life Navy Captain) so if he sails the little one for me I would have to outrank him!
