      The Figure 8 Voyage 2.0
We are elated to have sailing adventurer Randall Reeves share his sea stories as he sailed a 25,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe. In the fall of 2017 he departed San Francisco for the first-ever circumnavigation of both the American and Antarctic continents in one season. The route was to pass through all of the world’s oceans, approach both poles, and round Cape Horn twice. No one has done this before—no one has even tried.

Two months into the Figure 8 Voyage and while in the screaming 50s a mere 500 miles west of Cape Horn, Randall’s boat was caught in a heavy gale, which damaged both his self-steering devices and forced a stop for repairs in Ushuaia, ArgentinaTwo months later and while transiting the Indian Ocean, Randall met with another storm and a wave so severe that it knocked out a window in the pilot house and destroyed most of his electronics. By the time Randall had made the necessary repairs in Hobart,Tasmania, he judged it was too late in the season to continue with the Figure 8 Voyage for the year. Randall has subsequently sailed the length of the Pacific from Hobart back to San Francisco, completing a 25,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe via the Southern Ocean, what Randall is now calling the “longest shakedown cruise in history.” Because Randall has not quit, he will depart on a second try at the Figure 8 Voyage in late September of 2018.

    • Our famous red raffle finishes the Saturday evening event.   Prizes in the past are from our friends at Cruising Outpost, North Sails and Top & Bottom Boat Works (our own Mike Ransom).  If you wish to contribute to our raffle - please contact Randy Leasure.

    • Sunday 10:00 - head out to Tiburon for the fourth annual Westsail Parade across the bay to Pier 39.  Plan to join in the fun - here is a video from the 2015 Westsail Parade. Need a ride - ask around the dock if you wish to crew in the parade.

Southern California Westsail Fall Isthmus Why Knot Cruise Out, October 11 – 14, 2018

Isthmus in October is beautiful, lots of moorings open, nice and peaceful but the water is still warm enough to snorkel without a wetsuit. Santa Ana winds can occur but we will keep an eye on the weather and adjust accordingly  (plan B is Cat Harbor, a well protected Harbor on the backside).

Because it takes the better part if a day to get there, and because we are hoping to encourage a few more attendees in 2018 we will make this a Thursday to Sunday event.

If you are unable to bring your boat this year, but would like to attend we may be able to find you a crew position so let us know. Or the Catalina flyer out of San Pedro makes several trips a day. There are a few options for staying ashore including tent camping, tent cabin camping, seasonal employee bunk house rentals (private rooms shared bathrooms and cooking area) and the lovely Banning house B&B. The shoreboat is still running but if you let us know we will make sure you don’t miss out on boat visiting. Plus on Saturday we will set up pirate camp at the bbq pits and beach the dinghies and kayaks.

If you are bringing your boat, we have contacted the Harbormaster who will make every attempt to keep all of us Westie’s close together.  Look for the Westsail 32s at the west side if the Isthmus, on moorings C and D.  If you plan to attend please let us know the name and size of your boat, and how many nights you plan to stay so we can notify the Harbormaster.

As always, the rendezvous is a very informal and casual event with activities based on the number of Westsailor’s present, their energy level, and the weather. Our primary purpose is to renew old acquaintances, make new ones, tell almost true sea stories and most of all, visit boats !

Your hosts for this year’s event is Kirk Brown, and he can be reached on VHF channel 9, or by cell phone at 951-313-3637.  Look for the Westsail flags flying on some of the Westsail boats.

Mooring fee is based on manufacturers stated length – 10’ to 29’ is $38 per day, 30’ to 39’ $46.00 is per day, 40’ to 49’ is $54.00 per day

The planned loose schedule will include the following events:

THURSDAY or FRIDAY ARRIVAL – If coming by boat, call the Harbormaster on VHF channel 9 when you arrive at the harbor.  Be sure and let them know you are here to attend the WOA rendezvous. Look for the Westsail 32s at the west side if the isthmus, on moorings C and D. for any needed help in mooring your vessel.  Meet and greet any new faces and plan to attend a casual get acquainted happy hour aboard on one of the boats.  Which one will be determined and announced.  Feel free to bring your own and a little to spill to the gods of the sea.

THURSDAY evening – beer and brats on the beach (or Inalla – depending on arrivals and head count)

FRIDAY – Coffee and Danishes aboard Inalla. Informal Boat visiting and generally decompressing to island time. Cocktail hour at the bar at 5  and Dinner ashore at the restaurant at 7. This would be a good day to book the Buffalo tour for those arriving Thursday.

SATURDAY – Coffee and Muffins aboard Summerwind. Informal boat visiting. Pirate Costume Contest and best Pirate Dinghy Contest at 2 pm. Potluck on the beach at 5. After dark – Rum tasting aboard Inalla (including some special south and Central American rums picked up by certain pirates on gold expeditions).

SUNDAY – Breakfast at the café at 8. Departures.

There are plenty of moorings this time of year. Upon arrival hail Isthmus Harbor Patrol on VHF Channel 9 and ask for a mooring on B or C line. But please also let us

know you are coming, with or without your boat:

Kirk Brown at: (951) 313–3637 cell or email:

    Colleen Crystal at: (714) 943 – 2414 or email

And or sign up on WOA website-

     Additional contact phone numbers:                                    l

    Two Harbors Harbormaster – (310) 510-4253 0r (310) 510-4254

    Catalina Visitors Center - (310) 510-4205

Possible two night rentals at private homes - (877) 778-8322

Remember, you don’t have to be a Westsail owner to attend. Owners of all of the  Atkins/Archer/Double-ender types, and any other interested folks, are invited to enjoy the camaraderie and see our beautiful boats.  Spread the word in your home ports!!

Hope to see you on this special Fall weekend !
